OAJC Judge Learned Hand Award

Judge Learned Hand Award - 2010

OAJC honored Oregon Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul De Muniz with its 2010 Judge Learned Hand Lifetime Achievement Award at a luncheon in his honor on Tuesday, September 21 at the Portland Hilton Hotel.
At the same luncheon, OAJC also honored local attorney Elisa Dozono of Miller Nash LLP with its Emerging Leadership Award.

OAJC Board Member Dina Dubson of Stoel Rives LLP and Doug Houser of Bullivant Houser Bailey were the event co-chairs. About 170 people attended.

A highlight of the Luncheon was the keynote address given by
Judge Rick Haselton of the Oregon Court of Appeals. He concluded his remarks with this thought: "
Our challenge, and our charge, is to live each day judiciously in the best sense, with integrity, humility, insight, and compassion. Thus, four transcendent principles: First, judging is a sacred trust. Second, to do justice, one must act justly. Third, every case has dignity, and every litigant must be treated with respect. Fourth, each of us acts as a judge and must act justly in our own life."

Judge Haselton went on to say about Chief Justice De Muniz, "I know so well, from countless cases, conversations, and personal kindnesses, that today's honoree lives by and personifies those principles. I have been blessed to have him as my mentor as a judge, and it is a wonderful privilege to be his friend."

OAJC President Libby Schwartz presented the awards to both honorees. In her remarks to the audience after receiving the Emerging Leadership Award, Elisa Dozono said, "...
nothing is achieved without grace – as Betty (Roberts) noted in her book. Grace demonstrated by my grandparents and other local Japanese-Americans, who shook off the insult of internment to instead invest in and lead their communities. The good graces and support of friends, family, colleagues and mentors who have helped me become a better person by letting me take risks, learn from my failures, and catching me when I stumble. Grace to live my life without fear of not having tried hard enough, not helping when I could have ...
Collectively, we work to embody the spirit of liberty, described so eloquently by Judge Hand:
The spirit of liberty is the spirit which is not too sure that it is right; the spirit of liberty is the spirit which seeks to understand the mind of other men and women; the spirit of liberty is the spirit which weighs their interests alongside its own without bias; the spirit of liberty remembers that not even a sparrow falls to earth unheeded."
